How To Navigate The New Facebook Timeline For Pages – Tutorial

by Brandee

As of March 30, 2012, Facebook will be setting all ‘Liked’ Pages to the Timeline theme. Yes, it sucks. Yes, it’s hard to find anything. Yes, we all hate change. However, we are all capable of learning and becoming accustomed to the new layout. The only way to get around this is to stop using Facebook or we can accept it and just try to figure it out the best that we can. I have already published the LAC Facebook page to the Timeline theme so as not to overwhelm you when everyone else waits for the 30th mandatory switch.  You will hopefully be ahead of the game.

Before we get started, I suggest that you open a new tab or browser window by clicking this link to the LAC Facebook page. This way you can use this tutorial as guide while you use the actual page to learn the layout and use the tools I will be discussing.

General Navigation Layout for Pages

Main Navigation For Facebook Timeline For Pages

The graphic to the left represents the Main Navigation Header for the page. Here you will find all the information you need to navigate the page. Click on the graphic to open a new browser window displaying a larger version so that you may read red tip information more easily. This graphic covers navigation, making posts, finding older posts, photos and much more.

Once you start to scroll down the page, the quick navigation bar below will pop up at the top of the page. Yes, it is redundant as far as content, but it does serve a purpose. It will follow you down the page as you scroll, you’ll always have your navigation tools available to you without having to scroll all the way back to the top of the page to use the Main Navigation Header.

To use the bar navigation you simply click on the small down arrow next to Timeline, Now or Highlights.

Redundant Navigation Bar

  • Clicking on Life After Crohn’s will take you back to the top of the page
  • Clicking on Timeline will present the following choices: About, Photos, Likes, Twitter, Notes, RSS/Blog. These choices will vary from page to page that you belong to.
  • Clicking on Now will present you with Calendar Options to look at posts from present day all the way back in time to when the page was ‘Born’.
  • Clicking on Highlights, (this option may vary) this is very important. This is where you select what you want to see on the page. Highlights are stories that are chosen at random or by the admin to be highlighted or shown first. Friend Activity will show posts from people you are personal friends with on your own Facebook profile- who have also ‘Liked’ the Life After Crohn’s Page. Posts by Page will show only posts made by the Admin. In this case, me :). Posts by Others will display posts made by any member of the page who has left a post on the wall.

On the right side of the page just under the Main Navigation Header you will find your personal friends listing who also subscribe to LAC and the  ‘Recent Posts by Others on Life After Crohn’s’ Feed. In order to view this feed, make sure you have clicked HIGHLIGHTS from the navigation menu. This is the true guts of this LAC page from the members point of view. You will see all the recent posts by members. You are able to scroll through posts and answer questions, make comments, lend support, etc.
